ID stock cams

I have about a dozen stock cam under the bench. Can you some where near ID the cam with the (number- letter) that's between the lobes? I just picked one up and it says 8BA between the lobes. It has .300 (give or take ) lift. I would say that's a 49-50 Ford cam. Does the 52-53 Ford cam have say, EAB on it? I know the Merc cams have about .325-.330 lift. Do they have like, EAC on the cam some place? Does anyone have a list of stock 49-53 Ford and Merc cams with some kind of ID numbers on them? Thanks Walt

Walt, the cam you sent to me has no markings on it, but .330" lift. I'm in the process pf degreeing it in right now.

Hi Walt; If you'd like I'll stop by and take those old cams out of there for you. Please tell Rockie I said hello, Craig.

Hi Ron, The problem is, some of these early 8BA engines have valve setting .012-.014 and the later ones something like .014-.018 I guess you just flip a coin. Walt

Hi Walt; tildentechnologies.com has info on their flathead performance cams page that may help you. Also Larry seems like a good guy and may have a little more info than what's on their website. Good luck, Craig.

If I use my grandsons eyesight I should be able to find the ramp on the cam. I have several "Unknown" cams, like the Max #1 cam I took out if an engine that has no mrkings in it. OR the reground cam with .245" lift. Plus a few others. But this is just a learning process for Ben. For his Christmas vacation I;m going to show him how to bore an engine.

Wish my grandfather had been a car guy. My father didn't even check his own oil. Thankfully, I had a neighbor that tolerated the bratty kid next door.

Thanks JDI, that's great spec. I don't know how we ever got an engine built before this Ford barn. Walt

Early 49 ford cams have a spec of ( int 0-44) (ex. 48-6) setting of in .010-.012, ex. .0013-.015, don't know the lift. the late 49-51 should have a B stamped on the foward end. 52-53 should have a E stamped on the foward end or EA on the body. Merc cams should say 8CM or 1CM on the body.

Ok Walt, got the cam degreeing project on the road. Had to make a few fixture changes to make it easier to check several cams. The cam you sent me was the 52-53 "E" EAB cam and the numbers are with in a degree or too when the clearance is set at .014". Yes the ramp is visible on the dial indicator when the lash is set at ZERO. This makes lift difficult to check timing when you don;t know the checking clearance. I'll do the rest of the cams at running clearance of .016", this should limit the error to only a few degrees. I will includ this in the .050" reading. fun day tomorrow.

I,m worried,I,m using a 8ba style cam in my 33 that I machined the front off,it has 320 lift,I set the clearances at .012,should I do a reset.
Lawrie

I don't think so, the ram rate is very mild and the lift rate of the "Flank" is about .003-4". Now I haven't checked all the different 8BA profiles (6 I think) It will be interesting to see the .050" numbers.
The next cam in the mix is a no name Max #1.
