hey guys, ive got 2 Stromsburg 97s on my 8ba,
basically stock engine, with offenhouser heads and duel carb intake.
been running good for the last couple years, till last month, it started idling ruff, like it was cammed up or something,
now it just flattens out at around 1/4 throttle,
when yu give it gas, it cracks and pops, and just wont rev up smooth at all, it,ll actually start loading up now, blowen black smoke and wont even idle now.
iv took the carbs apart, cleaned them and same thing, ive replaced the fuel pump and regulator, got em set at 2 pounds of fuel.
ive changes the coil, a used one, ive changed points, condenser, rotor, cap and plugs, ive pulled the distributor, to check the drive gear, its all good, i found a busted vacuum diafram, fixed that,
still the same problem,
last night i figured, its gotta be a fuel delivery problem, so i pulled both carbs off again, the rear carb poured fuel out like i expected, the front carb was bone dry,
i blew every thing out again, raised the float level a tad, and it seamed ok at first, then after a couple minutes running it started the same thing. started missing, popping and cracking as i revved it, till it eventually started running like it was flooding or something,
i cant see or smell excessive fuel.
im at a loss,
could use some help guys,
thanks..

Elwood,
On the bone dry carb check to make sure both carbs have steel needles
and the inlet fitting is free of any burrs. Just to be on the safe side give each
steel needle a gentle tap to make sure it is seated in the fitting. I know some
really great carb guys use the viton or plastic tipped needles some work and some
don't in my expirience.
The breakup thing seems like coil breakdown or faulty points and/or con-
denser. In my trips down Flathead lane I've found the NAPA IH-200 condenser to
be the go to component.
Good luck.
