maybe some one out there can help me find...or manufacture the transmission adapter used in my 1939 pick up.....originally it used a 9n (tractor) 4 cylinder flathead engine,i have that, but no transmission will fit it....all the bell housings i have seen are for the flathead v8.....ford made a transmission or adapted one???..........HELP!!!!

the late 8ba v8 transmission bell housing is slightly too big and the starter is on the wrong side, the older engines (21 stud) have a cast in bell housing,so the transmissions would probably work if i had a bell housing on the 9n,but it don't because the 9n tractor engine has no built in bell housing ...a friend told me that ford made a adapter for the 39 and 40 pickups to use his new 9n tractor engine jcr500012@yahoo.com......thanks

I have seen a couple complete 40 pickups with 4 cyl but no idea what the bell looks like by itself.

I have heard it was an option up to 1947 in the pickups and they also had a different rear ratio. 456 were the 60hp was 444

I always was led to believe all ford PU with 4 cyl. tractor engines wer made in 41 only, no other yr???? yes or no?? ken ct. What you say Mr. Moose? According to the Green Bible there was a 4 cyl engine listed as 41-42 in commercial applic. Nothing for 39-40 listed as 4 cyl! ken ct.

Do a search (several different combos). There are engines for sale now.

What is serial # on your pu? "9" on 4 cyl 1940 PU means engine type 9n not
year. Your best parts source is used Ford tractor dealer/salvages. Lots
all over the country if you stick with 9N 120 CI engine.
Dennis Carpenter handles Ford v8, Cushman scooters, Ford N and later
series tractors.

Nixtochevy,

On reflection your need for flywheel cover adaptor , as you asked for
help with, is the issue. That is unique to 1940, few 1941 Ford PI & larger
trucks! with 4 cyl . No replacement part show in Green book.

Similar cover/ adaptor listed for 1947 6 cyl , doubt would fit 9N on engine
side.

Talk it up to everyone re 1941/1942 PUs and Large trucks & 9Ns.
Some 4 cyl engines/ trans are listed now.

Remember , you're having fun!
