I just keep ruining stuff....two steps forward, one step back.

So I got my head back from being machined. It looks great. I was bolting it back on today and the water neck broke...:(

And I still can't get the fan off the waterpump....

I feel like I never should have taken this thing apart.

Anyone local to Seattle have a good spare neck I could purchase asap?

Thanks for letting me vent.

Matt

reverse that nut on the pump. Get a good rubber mallet and give it a DAMN GOOD SMACK and maybe try some Kroil first to loosen it up.. Be patient. Sounds like the neck was bad to begin with and would have broke.. Get it on using RTV and NO Gasket Tighten to 50 then run it...get it hot and go to 55lbs slow!!

A friend helped my dad and me restore my rdst. pu and was constantly breaking stuff in the process. We nick named him, "Last Turn Turner". After 40 years that name still sticks. If it broke try to figure out why but don't second guess yourself. It's a hobby and supposed to be fun.....................

It helps to have a good book to refer to so you don't waste time and money of stuff like this. Invest $40 in Les Andrews's red book and give yourself some peace of mind. I suggest you do this before you break another water neck.

I had the idea that I should flatten mine---then i bolted it down and broke it, for a "tempoary" repair I brazed the ear back on ---that was 25 years ago, still working ---perhaps you know someone that could do it.

for the fan/waterpump get a nut and bolt the same thread, screw the nut 1/2 way on the waterpump, the bolt in the other 1/2 tightened some, sit, hold the fan on your legs, strike the head of the bolt sharply with a small hammer (less than 16oz)--if it doesn't pop right loose check that the bolt/nut stay tight to the fan shaft before you hit it again

a light hammer swung fast is better than a heavy hammer swung slow with a lot of force.

Why does the fan have to come off?

HANDS DOWN the best statement yet..GET THE BOOKS Vol, 1 and VOL 2 and VOL 3

Matt,
You are not alone. I am very good at working on cars. However, every time I fix something on my car, (water pump, wheel bearing, brakes...) it turns into more than I had bargained for. It is the nature of these old cars. You think you have everything covered to do a job, then there's one more part. It's normal. That's the fun and the challenge of it. Yes, the Les Andrews books are great. I have them and use them.

I am not certain, but I think the neck already had a problem.

I have tried various methods for fan removal similar to the above described, but haven't had much luck yet. I will try the smaller hammer.

the fan is coming off because it is cracked almost in half.

I hope you weren't using a paper gasket!:eek::eek::eek:

Paper gaskets are only sold to increase sales of water necks.:D:p

I tighten all the head nuts in at least 4 steps and haven't broken a water neck when using a copper gasket, or using no gasket, except a thin coat of RTV.:)

Wasnt there a trick a while back if i remember using a match book to off set the irregular clearances. As i remember. Tighting the neck was always tricky, best sparingly.

Fairly common problem sadly. On the fan deal i went with a new alum one (nice blade from syniders) and opt for the sealed pump as well. Still have the old 28 pump with the good old fan connected to it in the garage. Fan wasnt in bad condition but read a bunch about them coming apart and i replaced it....

One of the rules is that everyone has to break a water outlet. Now you can tick that off the list. If you go without a gasket, make sure both surfaces are very flat; if you go with a gasket, make sure both surfaces are very flat.
