I got a poser

A friendly Hello and happy Easter

I would like to hear your opinion.

I learned from other postings, that there are some poser cars arround
to look very shiny but do not have shocks at all and this would
be the reason that the car will not go over 50mph.

Max speed of my car up to now was close to 50mph (not over).
This is due to the fact, that the engine doesnt want to go faster .
This is absolutely ok for me :D
(Carb is rebuilt and timing and ignition are ok )

My car is shiny....

...and i got to admit that it does not have shocks at all.

I use to travel at 40 to 45 on open roads and i feel ok with the way
the car acts till its own max speed !

I own this car for one year now and im somewhat proud that it goes like
it does. I got to solve some other probs first but - ja - i would like to install shocks than.

Who of you ever tested the shocks on his car?
Do/did they work ?

If NOT, how did you find out that they dont work ????
(i feel that nobody would deinstall shocks and test them just
because he is bored)

On ther other hand, it might not be usefull to be proud to have
shocks if they dont work :p

Do you use originals or do you use modern style?

A friend of mine bought new (original-style) shocks and tested them
before mounting. 2 out of 4 didnt work right OUT OF THE BOX!
I would have installed them without testing :o

Please share your thoughts
Thank you

Best regards Christoph

First of all shocks have nothing to do with how fast your car will go. It will have everything to do with how fast you want the car to go.

With that said if you want the shock that henry used, there are several peole that will rebuild the shocks as original. There is also Bill Stipes brand new original style shocks and several people that sell the "modern" tube shocks. I have only read this but there seems to be quite a differencd in the ride between the different modern shock brands. It seems to have something to do with gas vs oil filled. The ride can be quite stiff with the wrong ones. There is also a difference in the mounting of the tube shocks some need you to drill a hole in the front axle.

Thank you very much Mike

I figured out that it has nothing to do with how fast it will go
(this was just a copy of an other posting found some days ago) :o

Sorry for setting you on the wrong track.

After reading your posting, im even more scared as it might be
worse with shocks than without????
( I do not have a second car to compare with ).

I wondered how it could happen, that there are obviously a lot of
cars like mine touring without shocks....
Who might have taken the shocks out and throw them to the junk ?
Why to do that?
Seems there are owners who dont like or need shocks or they see disadvantage????

If it might be somewhat stiff laterone, id better stay without???

Do you use some ?
Which kind?
Which brand?

Thank you :)

The reason some cars don't have shocks is that, way back when, the original shocks wore out or froze up and they didn't work anymore or bent the shock arms and the owner took them off. Way back when people didn't always have the money to replace bad components and they just got along without them.

Hello Christoph,

Just thought I would mention that I have a distant relation who lives in Oestrich along the Rheim. My brother and I visited a few years ago and it is beautiful country.

About shocks. When I finished my "Huckster" last year, it did not have shocks. When driving it, I found it would lean a lot when going around a curve. So I purchased some new aftermarket shocks from M & S Hydraulics in Aloha Oregon. The set of 4 ran about $500 USD. Since putting them on the huckster it does drive a lot better. It holds the road better, goes around curves better and just seems to ride better. I also only like to drive about 40-45 MPH and the car seems to work best at that speed.

If you would like some more information on the shocks I purchased, just send my a priviate message and I will send it to you. Good luck with your car.

Thank you Larry
Now i understand - once they freeze up, its for sure better to take them away .

He Fred
will contact you soon

Thank you again
Best regards

My observation is that the difference between a Model A witout shock absorbers versus a Model A with properly rebuilt shocks installed is like the difference between a baby carriage and a properly suspended car.

I COULD NOT BELIEVE the difference, after having driven thousands of miles WITHOUT shocks how much SAFER and IN CONTROL I felt after the installation of properly rebuilt shocks.

Back in the 80s I drove several months without shocks. Up in Ohio the roads had lots of frost heaves, 2" raised sections across the county roads. They made the rear of the car bounce in the air then the torque of the driveshaft made the rear twist sideways and come down. Quite a ride till I added original shocks. Then it was smooth all the time. The rear ones helped more than the fronts. I guess the weight of the motor on that big 10 leaf spring kept the front from bouncing around. My opinion is get some kind of shocks on the car. Much safer and comfortable. Thanks

If you like body roll, rocking chair rides, the feeling that the car may go anywhere at any time after hitting a bump, and nose dives and darting into the other lane or off the road after hitting the brakes(especially with a weak front spring) ...don't put shocks on....fwiw,jm

I drive my 1930 two door around with out shocks . But it was not stable going around corners. I purchased a panard bar and installed on the front end. You have to try it to believe how good it works. the body does not lean on curvy roads at all. Snyders cataloge sells them ,around 100 dollars.

Dad's Roadster never had shocks, he did buy new repos some time in the 1970's, just found the box with them a few days ago. If I install them it would make more shelf room once I fingue out what corner the shocks fit.

Roadsters and coupes without passengers in the rumble seat are probably ok without shocks, but as soon as you get some weight in the rear you'll be in trouble without them. With heavier bodies like sedans, station wagons, and deliveries, shocks are a must.

Shocks.....my driving analysis

my first Model A had no shocks.
did not realize how badly it rode & handled until I bought the 2nd Model A, which came with a new set of repro shocks still in the box.
both cars were 30 Tudors, but there was a night & day difference in the driving experience.

I have driven both our Coupe and a 3rd Tudor without shocks while the originals were being rebuilt by John Holland. it's scary how bad the car rides & handles without, compared to with.

put some shocks on your car, you won't regret it.

thank you all for your help and sharing your ideas !!!

seems i will have to install shocks soon

Best regards from Germany
Christoph
