Hypothetically painting

If I were to hypothetically repaint my license plates, where would I get a yellow that is similar to the one used on the letters? And what product do you recommend?

Well, first make sure of your state laws. It's legal up here in WA, but so is weed now. Don't know about CA.

Then Google "restoring vintage plates", and take your pick.

To get a match, an automotive paint store would be the best place.

If your going to use it as YOM plate, make sure the DMV allows restored plates. Some don't.

I'm pretty sure it is not legal, but the plates were already altered with hard to see black and grey that looks like it had been done a long time ago. Should I just switch my plates to another set?

You should be able to find out what the rules actually are, before you decide what you need to do.

Model Year Date License Plates
"5004.1. (a) (1) An owner of a vehicle that is a 1969 or older model-year vehicle or the owner of a commercial vehicle or a pickup truck that is a 1972 or older model-year may, after the requirements for the registration of the vehicle are complied with and with the approval of the department, utilize license plates of this state with the date of year corresponding to the model-year date when the vehicle was manufactured, if the model-year date license plate is legible and serviceable, as determined by the department, in lieu of the license plates otherwise required by this code.(2) The department may consult with an organization of old car hobbyists in determining whether the date of year of the license plate corresponds to the model-year date when the vehicle was manufactured."

The above paragraph says the (matched pair of) plates have to be the same year as the vehicle and "...legible and serviceable, as determined by the department..."
but says nothing about 'restored' or 'original'.

> Having restored plates sure looks like it's OK, since both of these guys are in Calif. and restore Calif. license plates for collector cars...

"I ran into a couple of snags getting my California YOM plates so I wanted let you know how to avoid the problems I ran into........... (more)
You can contact the DMV to see if a set of plates is clear. Their number is 1-800-777-0133. Dial 1 to get English, then 0 to get an agent. The 800 number agents know of the YOM law and can quickly check to see if the number is in use.
"

Theoretically the person answering the phone should also know their rules about 'restored' or 'original only'.

More general info here....

I've done a few here and it depends on the person your talking to at the dmv. I've had one question if it was a real plate ('47 plates were made in aluminum also), I've even had one dmv tell me to restore then first. Get good quality automotive paint (some store will put it in a spray can for you), regular spray can doesn't handle the sun for too long.

As for the dmv, arm yourself with knowledge of the YOM program and info on the plates (colors, years, tabs and construction). Be nice, you may need to ask for a manager, be prepared to walk away and try another dmv. They may need to photo copy them to send to Sacramento, but NEVER leave the plates with them. If they're registered to your vehicle already then your golden.

The first one is my house number made up from a rusted plate and the last two are before clear coat.
