hydrostatic gas guage

I am rebuilding a hydrostatic gas guage and purchased a rebuild kit for it from Mac's Auto Parts. There is a brass rod 1/8" dia. and approx. 2" long inside the glass resevoir. The rebuild kit does not show this rod, or address it at all. So I was wondering what the purpose of this rod is, or if it's even suppose to be in there...Any one have any information to share, I would appreciate it.

That is called a calibrating rod. They used ones slightly differant to adjust the zero mark with a precise amount of the red fluid in the glass tube. This rod has a slight bend to hold it in and can be removed to clean the unit. Replace it when done. I have rebuilt a lot of those, if you need help let me know. I also wrote details of how to rebuild and check them on several forums, maybe someone can post them. Pictured is the unit and a test hose I used. G.M.
