HVLP setup

700 RPM. My thought are make sure the compressor is a good one can keep up the velocity at your spray gun .you should use the psi that is on the paint cans suggestion .Put a regulator on your gun, and put a moisture trap leaving the compressor tank before entering your air hose.THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO HAVE THE RIGHT PSI WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY SPRAYING THE PAINT OUT OF YOUR GUN!!

I had always used a high pressure DeVilbus gun my father had when he went into business in the 40s. Used it on my Model A. When it was time to repaint my Lotus, I borrowed a Graco CX-7 hvlp setup from a friend of mine. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner running and the hose is quite large. Attached are some photos of using it and the finished product. In the first picture you can see the gun in use. The second, shows the finish right after appling the clear coat. The third shows the "compressor" behind the Model A front fender and the last shows the car after compounding the finish and all back together. There was very little over spray using this setup. The paints used were Dupont Chroma base with activator.

Did you shoot that entirely outside?

One other thing we have not discussed regarding equipment is 'shoot-suits' and 'fresh air' systems. Those are probably just as, --if not more important than the gun and compressor if you plan on living to spray another one in urethane! ;)

700RPM
Yes, I sprayed both cars outside under a 10' canopy to keep the leaves and bird poop off. I did catch a bunch of bugs though. With just the slightest breeze, most of the over spray missed me. The Model A (my avatar) was done in lacquer and clear coated.
The orange wheels were powdercoated.
