Hub Cap opinion wanted

Here are pictures of two hub caps. The one on the left I'm hoping is an original because of the crispness of the FORD script plus it has a distinct overlap of the curl (see arrow). The picture on the right is an A & L cap that is said to be as the best reproduction available.

Is the one on the left an Original or just a quality reproduction?

first merry Christmas. the one on the left looks to be original. if you show some pictures of the back side it would help to distinguish if it is original.

Marco, I looked at your picture before I posted this question but wasn't able to get a clear enough view especially of the curl. So, what IS your opinion?

Look at ALL the features meaning the script shape (top of the "F" is important) as well as the shape of the off-set of the recessed circle. All the versions I've shown are original but differ by the supplier. The letters shown below the pic represent the manufactures stamping that will appear on the liner on 99% of original caps.

Your example appears to be an original "R". I'll take a closer look at a couple of mine later today.

I don't want to be a smart ***, but if it takes a spectral-analysis, carbon-probing, or DNA-testing to tell an original apart from a reproduction, I'd say it's nothing to lose sleep over.

Wow! Great comparison Marco.... It's interesting to see the differences in the "F" and the length of the tail on the "F" as well as the tail up on the "d" and other differences. I wonder why Ford either gave the supplier different logos or the suppliers did their own tooling but not to the exact likeness of the "Ford" logo. In todays world of strict logo standards by large companies these variances would never be tolerated.

I would also assume that being a "production" car they wouldn't have cared if all hubcaps matched if pulling stock for installation on wheels. They would just make sure it had a hubcap on it. Would that be tolerated in today's fine point?

Thanks for your photos Marco,
Larry Shepard

Well, with all due respect, that is exactly what that comment is. Please do not belittle those of us who DO care about authenticity or correctness.

What do you think?

It's very interesting!!

It appears like the "E" cap has a bit of a lip around the outside edge. I see this on some of the repro caps also. I got rid of a set of caps because they had that lip around the outside edge and I just assumed they were repros. Appears I may have been a bit hasty.

The ones on my 31 right now look like the "R" caps.

The E cap appears to have a flat center, unlike the dome that is supposed to signify original. I suppose that could be the lighting, or is it flat?.

Brent, why is there so much hassle lately from some of the Fordbarner's about the posting of very interesting finer points of the hobby? I thought that was what this web site was about. If they think it's to finite, why complain, just don't read it. I am fascinated by it, and love how in depth the research can get. I look for posts by you, Marco, Vince, and others. Thanks, Ed Saniewski
