What's the best way to tell what hp your motor is. I want to replace the water pumps and I see they are sold by the hp. Thanks!!

HP ratings were based on cubic inches among other things. But that should not be the only deciding factor in selecting parts. What are you wanting water pumps for (year and model)?

If the pumps are for your avatar, it could have come from the factory with a 60 hp or an 85 hp engine which use different type pumps. What you need to know is what year engine presently is in the car as well as the hp "size". Count the head studs on one side, 17=60 hp 24=85.

Sorry, 39 coups deluxe

Does the distributor look similar to this one, mounted mid-way down on the front of engine, AND does the fan mount lower down on the crankshaft? These two clues would at least indicate an "original type" engine. DD

It is very unlikely that the '39 in question is a V8 60... In all probability it is a 24 stud, 85-95 HP engine that would use the standard '37-48 water pumps.
It would be advisable to use the improved water pumps that Skip Haney in Florida makes. You can also get new improved water pumps from Speedway or Drake, however, they are after market re-production pumps that are made "out of country", and have proved to be very problematic.

Yep, 24 head studs
