how to spread leaf spring

Back in the 50's we used a bumper jack with a piece of pipe hammered into a point at one end and the jack rod cut to a point at the other. Never killed any body, but there were some injury.

Tom, thanks for posting a picture of a Porta Power being used as a spring spreader. Looks like renting a PP is a good way to go, especially if doing a one time job that you may never need to do again. What is the cost to purchase a PP like the one you show?
Based on these comments copied below and originally posted by Ross Murphy and Pete, FL/WI, what makes a Porta Power any safer than other designs discussed or shown on this post? 100% security is pretty darn secure but what gives you that claim? Curious minds are wondering

I'm still using the spring spreader my great uncle made when the 32 Ford came out and he thought what Ford was selling to the dealers was to expensive. One inch ready bolt inside of a tube thats smashed flat on the end with the ready bolt hammered flat on the other end. Takes a big wrench to turn this one.

This is a good way to go, however there is nothing to prevent the ends of the rams from slipping sideways (especially important on the 32-34 curved springs where the eyes are not parallel) and the spring contracting (violently and without discrimination as to which direction...). The KRW had straps on the ends to prevent this from
happening, which is what I put on mine accordingly. I would also have one end of the spring already connected before expanding it
with anything, as per my previous post.
