How to remove bell housing from 47 sedan

While I've got the transmission out of Old Henry for repair I wanted to remove the flywheel to get resurfaced and balanced. Don't know why I didn't notice before getting the flywheel off of the crankshaft that it was too big to get through the hole it needed to leave through but I didn't.

As far as I can tell, the only way to finish removing the flywheel from the car is to remove the bottom bell housing.

For the life of me, I have not been able to figure out how to get the bell housing off so I can get the flywheel out.

How do you do that? Or, is there some other way to get the flywheel out?

Have to remove oil pan, the rear section is non removable from oil pan. Unless it’s a truck and you would see the bolts if that were the case

To clarify: The lower bellhousing is part of the oil pan. Hence the oil pan has to come off.

OK. Oil pan has to move.

So, the next question is: Can I lower the oil pan enough to get the flywheel out without removing the exhaust crossmember or raising the engine?

If it were me..(I know, easy to say when I’m not doing it)…you’re in this far, I’d pull the engine so I could do a good clean of the oil pan and oil pump screen. I would be afraid of being haunted by oil leaks by trying to just drop it enough to get the flywheel out. More work now or more work later………Mark

You can remove the pan with the engine in place. No need to lift it. when you remove the bolts holding the pan don't forget the one from the top at the right side rear. You may need to rotate the crank so the front counter weight is pointing up towards the cam. If the car has a single exhaust the crossover pipe needs to come off.
