How to remove a ****** input shaft?

I need to know how long the front shaft is for one, the trans with the 4 holes so I can bolt up to the y-block bellhousing also. I can cut the front input shaft 3/8" or 1/2" and have the front bearing retainer made a little smaller to fit the y-block housing as you said but the right trans is what I need to know. HELP Dav

dav,
I could take the measurements off of the stock 55 Ford trans, and this would get you in the ball park. I won't be able to get to it till Friday. It's dark before I go to work, and dark when I get home. I'll have to dig it out of the back of the wagon.
The shaft lengths are definitely different, because I've heard guys talking about only taking off 3/8ths of an inch in length, we had to take off a 1/2 inch.

What mustang trans are you using I know it's a 4 speed and a 1967. Is there a tag number on it ?. I'm just trying to get the right mustang 4 speed. I think yours is the small V8 trans. I didn't see were your from until today North Pole, Alaska. Thank god for computers. I'm here in the land of the Pilgrims Plymouth, ma.

Look for a 65-73 Ford toploader transmission. You should try to make sure that 's what it is, as Ford later made 4 speeds with the fourth gear position being an overdrive. The gearbox itself is cast iron, gears load from the top. Later some O/D transmissions were aluminum cased. Some were shifted with a lever like an early Ford. There were 2 sets of ratios. One close and one wide. You want the wide set up with a 2.78 first gear. Also, you should plan on rebuilding the transmission. It's not terribly hard and a good kit with everything you need can be had from "Toploader Heaven". Includes a video. Probably one of the best transmissions ever. I have one behind my flathead
Good Luck
Jim

DAV,

No pics yet,Like I said it's at a friends house and he's got the specs written down, as Jim said this one is a toploader as well.
I will try and get to his house this weekend and get the info we have, I'm sure there's alot more Ford Barners out there with more detail on Tag #'s, etc.
