How to "motor" a generator? Tom?

I should know this but don't recall how to properly motor a model A generator. I am trying to determine if it is rebuildable or not. Tom?

Power to post---- ground to case, no belt, should turn -- for stock gen, if modified it depends on what was done

Just because it motors doesn't mean it has good windings, but usually if it motors it isn't burned to a crisp---- conversely if it doesn't motor doesn't mean that it is burned up

According to a old book I have, the 3 &5 brush generator should motor with 5 amps or less; often times week brush springs will occur over the years and need to be replaced.

A generator with half the brush spring tension doesn't seem like it would be a big deal, but I can tell you from experience it will greatly reduce the output.

For motoring a generator, do as Kurt said, and if you are measuring the current draw used to motor it, I get about 8 to 10 amps with the generator spinning the 1/4 HP electric motor on my homebuilt test stand. So, free of any load 5 amps sounds about right.
