How to keep a 1962 title?

Hi all,

My father and I just took in a 1958 Edsel Citation Convertible. It's in pretty nice shape, just needs a good cleaning and detailing, and some light mechanical work - new starter, most of all.

The car had a title that was issued in 1962, from when the original owner passed the car on to his son. I'd love to be able to keep this title with the car. Does anyone know if there's a way to have a new title issued and still retain the old one? I thought I'd ask here since the answer at the DMV is likely to be "No, and I'm going to lunch."

Thanks for any information. Below is a pic of the car being brought home.

A friend just went through this process in Michigan - they voided his vintage title and issued him a new one. No idea whether they'll do that in Illinois, though.

The last time I checked in California if the title has been lost the seller just fills out a form to request a new title at the time the new owner registers the car. Did you loose the old title?

Charlie may well have it...
but another perspective: There are probably a number of DMV offices withing your range, and dozens or maybe hundreds of clerks...go in, and ask your question as a matter of information. It does not matter how many clerks say "no way!", you only need one who says "yes"...when you find that one, whip out your title and get the job done right away.

Bruce, that philosophy has worked well for me, for a long time. I never get discouraged with the first answer - I just walk away, and ask the same stuff over again to another clerk, another day. I once took two years to get a title - it just took the right person, with the answer I wanted.
As Charlie said, in ca, it's pretty easy. Titles get lost, frequently. Actually, in ca, it is often easier to get a title for one of our 'oldies', if you have NOTHING, and if the vehicle is not in the dmv computer. Quite recently, I had a dmv gal tell me that if I did NOT have the papers I brought her, she could do.... such n such. I quickly lost the papers, right there in front of her, and she completed the transaction within minutes.

Washington State I asked for my old title back. It was voided and given back.

Might ask, they can't say no if you don't ask.

Good luck,

Fourdy

I just went through this here in California. My truck had been off the road for fifty years and was in no data base for DMV. I was advised to go into DMV with the "my dog ate my homework" excuse. I provided them with a couple of reg. tags and filled out several forms. I was able to keep original paperwork on the truck but lost the plates. I was unable to show proof that they had ever been registered to the truck. Truth is, they probably never were. Now looking for a couple of 36' commercial plates to put on the truck. Good luck with your trip to DMV. Patience will help you to get what you want. Mine took five visits and ten hours to complete.

I would try photocopying the title... then claim you can't find the original title but do have a copy that the previous owner sent you

If you can't keep the original, you can make a photocopy of the original and keep it for record purpose.

Right here in wonderful IL-ICK-NOISE about four years ago, I sold a 1955 chevy convertible that I had owned for 28 years. It had a good clear title. The new owner sent the title in to be transfered to him, he got back a title with one of the serial numbers missing and nothing ,just a blank space, where it should say body style.
I would suggest you have the current owner apply for a "lost" title. When he gets that have that one transferd to you and keep the original as a keepsake.
