How to ID a 390?

The FE series was the original "big block" Ford engine, and probably the most famous horsepower maker/race car engine series in Ford's history. The 385 series wasn't introduced until '68, and even then wasn't called a "big block". I have 2 thoughts on why the 385 series didn't get the title. First, the block itself is smaller in design, much like a small block. Secondly, as mentioned it came along 10 years later than the FE. In my opinion it never really got the title until after production of the FE series ended after 1976

It's been a while ago, but when I took the 360 out of my '71 F100 and dropped a 429 in there, it sure seemed bigger, and it was refered to as a "Big Block" then. And I'm pretty sure it weighed more. At least it seemed that way. But like I said, that was in '75 and lots of water under the bridge since then.
