How to heat flywheel ring

OK, so i'm trying to get this right the first time. Now that I look at the new ring I see where the teeth are bevel or pointed on one side. But where I'm confused is why does the new ring have a 1/8" chamfer on the inside diameter that will face the front of the car once the ring is in placed. When I first saw the ring I thought the chamfer was there to help get the ring started on the flywheel. Looks like the chamfer should be on the aft side of the ring.

So you are saying that the chamfer on the inside diameter of the ring gear is opposite the bevel on the teeth? A picture would help. Sorry I don't have an unattached ring gear floating around to take a look.

My camera is not working now but, yes the chamfer on the inside diameter of ring is opposite bevel on teeth. Maybe the vendor third gen, will know. I will call and see but most of these people just sell parts. Thanks for your help

Well, regardless of that bevel, the important thing is that the teeth face aft. The drive gear on the starter snaps forward to engage those teeth - as long as you are using a factory-style standard starter (regardless of whether you are using an original Bendix drive or a "modern" Bendix drive.) If you are using a 12V reduced gear drive starter then the teeth can face forward.

I agree. The ring is for years 28 thru 48. Maybe some of those years have the chip teeth facing towards the front. At any event I'm installing gear with teeth facing back of car. I just hope the ring does not slide on the flywheel due 1/16 less metal holding ring in place.

Just to put an end to this thread I tried the oven and it did not get it hot enough. took it to a machine shop and they put it on. Best 60.00 dollars I ever spent. Got engine all back together and runs fine. I believe it has a little bit less vibration then before. All the teeth on the old ring were chip bad. That's why I changed it and now the weight is equal all around.
