How to get windshield out?

Ok, so the gasket around my windshield (57 wagon) is rock hard-I mean rock hard. How do I get it out? I k ow I need to cut it away but the razor doesn’t even scratch it. Ideas?

On my '54 the gasket was rock hard too (20 years sitting in a field). I was able to just shove a screwdriver between the inside lip of the rubber and the header panel, push the handle up and the gasket would break right off in chunks. Carefully scraped around the perimeter with an awl and razor knife too and the windshield popped right out. Make sure to have someone hold the bottom of the glass while you push on the top section. You don't want it popping out and hitting the floor! Just sayin'.

I'm not exactly sure how they did it, but when I owned a music store I would occasionally have non-musicians coming in to buy guitar strings so they could remove windshields. As I recall, it was the steel strings they wanted, not nylon or bronze/nickle wound strings...but I can't say for sure. Maybe .014 or .016 thickness, probably to cut through the gasket or seal. You'd probably need a dowel on each side to wrap the string around.

Are you sure that wasn't one of the "Sopranos"?

It's a lot easier if you're not trying to save the gasket and re-use it. I don't know how they got those windshields and back glasses in on a moving assembly line.
