OK Know that in this huge brain of tried this and tried that..... I have a 29 Sport coupe. The cloth top on is in good shape but could use a good washing. If it were replaceable I would remove it and put it in the washer :p..... BUT that's not happening. I was told to put some bug cleaner on it... NOT-- think it's a bit too strong for cloth that is 80 years old.

thanks for the help. D

I would use a steamer and see if you can loosen the dirt and blot it off first. Chemical are generally tough on aged fabric, ...and soaps generally re-attract dirt.

.

I was watching the detail guy's one day at the body shop and they used a mild detergente like Tide or Cheer power. They did the rugs ,cloth seats and door panels.I started using Cheer liq. to shampoo/clean my home rugs too.

Regular vacuuming will extend the time before the inevitable. I scrub spots off uphoulstry and door panels but avoid head liners and canvas tops.

After you do get it clean, give it a good soaking with SCOTCHGUARD. that will keep it clean. You will see the water bead up when it gets wet.

Orvis horse shampoo, also used to clean fine linen's. Use a soft brush. This will soften and lube fibers, worked wonders on my org top that was so stiff you would have thought it would crack if moved. Info came from gentleman at Fords Greenfied village. Works good on the dog to.

I use a "Canvas Cleaner" for my convertible boot that is exposed to the NY Metro air outside a lot, that I purchased at West Marine that is a "Spray on dry, let soak and brush, then wipe off," that does a tremendous job and appears to be gentle on the canvas. I can find the brand if you are interested.

thanks-- Got to order some stuff from Mac's anyway, add another item to the list. Didn't think about the SCOTCHGUARD but have used it before on various things.
