I was suprsed the the poll showed the highest percentage of people getting their first A at such a young age. I didn't get mine until I just a couple of years ago at the age of 47. I just didn't have the disposable income at that age for a hoby that can at times be pretty spendy.
I wonder what the poll would say if the question was: What age were you if you aquired your 1st Model A within the last 10 years?
Dave

My model a is my third car. I aquired a 66 mustang @ 19 and then restored a 1931 chevy when I was 30. I finished the '31 and just got the '29 ford.

Dad bought me my pickup (avatar) when I was 14, started to restore, then turned 16, got a drivers license, discovered girls, and so on, finally got all three kids through college and married - told the wife it was MY turn. I managed to find all the pieces after being apart for 35 yrs and finished it last year.

I bought my first Model A when I was a Sophmore in High School a couple of months before I turned 17. I saw it parked outside of the High School when school resumed after Christmas Vacation 1961. When I saw it I new that I had to have it. I hunted down the owner who was a senior and ask him if he wanted to sell it. He said yes that he would take fifty bucks for it. It was one of the greatest buys of my life. I had to return the battery though, as it was his friends fathers tracter battery. This resulted In my aquiring an old used battery that made it nessesary to park on a hill or crank it to get it started. The guy that I bought the A from told me that he had traded a shotgun for it. Unfortunately I had to sell it when I went to college. I aquired another Model A about five years ago and am having a ball with it. Check my Avitar for a picture of my first Model A.

Got my first Model A, a 1930 standard Coupe, in 1963 when I was a senior in high school. Bought it from the daughter of the original owner, and she wanted me to swear I would not hot rod it. Drove that car 4 years and put over 30,000 miles on it, then sold it in 1967. Then, 40 years later, I finally got my next A...a 1930 Town Sedan, and I just love it!

I mised my first chance by only 2 hours to own a 31 coup for $50 and was badly disapointed since the person that bought it new I was waiting to get my pay check that
Friday evening, I was only 11 years old at the time. She was a hateful old bity and displayed the car on top of her business until it was so badly deterated it was hauled off years later for scrap. Not to be out done I bought a 23 model T touring car that had been cut down with a flat bed on it for $60 and drove it till I bought a 29 tudoor sedan when I was 18. I have had several Model A's and Model T's since and still have both the first T and A I bought plus 2 more A's and a TT fire truck. 63 now and love'em more every day.

I bought the '28 A in my avatar when I was 15, back in '58. They were easy to find in those days. It had a coupe body with rust damage in the back, so I bought a tudor body with a rusted cowl for $5. , and combined the 2 bodies to make a nice tudor.
I decided I wanted an "old car", so I traded the A for a '26 Model T coupe.
I've been thru a number of other old cars since then. Today I have a stock '31 A Deluxe Roadster and a '29 A Tudor Old School Street Rod.

I was 25 yrs old., except this survey doesn't allow that number.

Damn it's getting hard to just fit in...can't even enter a free survey :D

15 for the 31 Fordor, then 26 for the 31 Pickup, and 68 for the 30 Tudor. Learned the bulk of my mechanics on the Fordor and sold it four years later, considerably worse than when I got it. Still have the pickup, it is a faux woody rod. The Tudor is still A powered but not stock under the hood.

Its interesting how many people got started so young. Continuing the thought about where our hobby will be headed in the future - how many young guys are getting started now - or even interested for that matter? I'm curious to see who will be buying or taking care of these cars in 20-30 years.

I was 15 when my granddad told me one Saturday morning he wanted to take me for a ride and we went to the next county where there were FIVE model A's lined up at a car lot. He knew I loved them and we looked at them all and he told me to take my pick. I ended up with a '30 Tudor for $300. That was 1974... Man I wish I still had that car!

Many years later we partnered up on a '30 Coupe. Great memories! He is solely responsible for my love/addiction of old cars. He died 8 years ago at 98 and I still miss him like it was yesterday.

Hey kyvetteman that had to be in Somerset on Hwy 80 with 5 Model A's on the lot. Sorry I can't remember his name but he always had some nice A's on the lot including at one time a 2 door Phaeton!

Interesting survey. I am not surprised by the percentages and the majority starting at a young age.

I would like to see a survey asking what year you got/started into Model A's (I started in 1968). I am guessing the percentages may be similar to the age survey; that most started 50-60 years ago versus 10-20 years ago.

I don't have the knowledge to implement a survey of this type. Could someone with that knowledge get one going?

Thanks, Ron/IA

I owned my first Model A (actually an AA) when I was 14. Had that one and then a Fordor until I was 19. 50 years without one until I got the one in my avitar at the ripe old age of 69. I let too many other things get in my way, wish I hadn't! The last 2+ years have been a hoot!

I was 15 when I bought my 1st 30Cp. for $90. My mom asked my dad why he let me buy an old car like that. My dad said it had lots of potential. I have since had 18 Model A's & now have six, although two are apart & not running.
