My first car was a 1937 Ford 4-door $50 beater. This was in 1949. The dealer added a full tank of gas at no extra charge. Now you can't even fill up for $50. The car ran like a top, but used about a quart of oil every 50 miles. I don't know if it burned it or leaked - probably both. I always used bulk oil at 15c per quart and the friendly owner of my favorite gas station saved oil from oil changes of new cars for me at no charge. The car always started winter or summer and was very fast for its day.
One day I was driving it over a long bridge and at the end of the bridge the hood flew off - luckily it landed in the grass along the river bank. I stuck it back on the car and held it in place with a piece of hanger wire and drove home. When the muffler went bad, I bought some flexible metal tubing and ran the pipe off the manifold and hung it back under the hood side panels, facing down. This added to the fun, but sure was loud. It finally gave up and was scrapped.
