How much effort for new king pins?

I have installed and reamed new bushings in the spindles for my king pins. the king pins themselves where good with absolutely zero wear on them, probably having already been replaced in the past. The pins are going in tight, which I assume to be a good thing. My question is; can I use a block of wood to drive them in, or will too much pressure disfigure the "bowl" part of the king pin from doing this? I know pressure means different things to different people. Lets say a dozen very healthy whacks from a large ballpeen hammer on a piece of wood to the top of the pin to get it home. Excessive?

I don't think you should need to "drive" the kingpins into the bushings. The bushings probably need a little more material taken off. They should be a tight slip fit I believe.

Yep, WAY too excessive!! You should be able to drop them in with about the pressure you could exert with your pinky finger. Is it possible they were fitted (reamed) on each end without the bushings being aligned with each other? Persoanlly, I would start over using new bushings and have them fitted with a wrist pin hone.

never ever drive in king pins, if they are that tight they will not get grease, you should be able to push them in with your thumb with no more pressure than is needed to squeeze tooth paste out of the tube
