How Many Spare Flathead V-8 Engines Out There?

DSlim, nice video. The sound of that idle on the flathead is addicting. Ryan should have that for a sound bite when you log in on the FordBarn.

Now if I could just find a "spare" that's not cracked :D

Like a kid at Christmas, I just acquired a truck load of flathead stuff. It is all 49-53. I think I got a merc engine. It is disassembled, but the back of the block looks like factory merc green. I got 2 cranks, 8 heads, all the bolt on stuff twice. It looks like I got 2 engines short 1 block. I also got 2 top shifter transmissions, flywheels, clutchs and press plates, 1 radiator and a box of bolts, valves and misc. He told me to wait and he would see if his wife had not thrown out some gaskets. He had about 4 sets of head gaskets and about 4 or 5 intake gaskets. Did real good on the price and he was pleased also. I want to be on good terms. He has a 63 T Bird sitting in the barn. The engine is under a tarp, 390, but he said he rebuilt and never put it back in the car. Real nice guy, a diesel mechanic, retired. Anyway, need to check the cranks and see if, I got real lucky or just lucky.

Good news. I unloaded the flatheads today. It looks like a complete merc 49-53, less a set of merc heads. The block is 30 over. The rod journals were 30 under. I did not have time to research everything. Did get an alum timing cover on the merc. The other crank is a ford with a set of rods and pistons with it. Looks like 2 stock cams with alum timing gears. Naturally 2 94 carbs.

Iv got 2 running flathead v8 cars 1 running flathead v8 truck and 1 running 21 stud on a stand, and 2 uncracked 8ba,s. Couple A 4 bangers I cant seam to part with, just taking up room.

Assuming " spares " means ones not in cars ; eleven 33-34's , one 35-36 babbit , one 37 , one 39 & one late 37 - early 38 { cast block with tapered pumps } V-8 60 . And a reasonable pile of related stuff .
