How many miles

Should I put on my newly rebuilt engine before it's broken in enough to switch to synthetic oil? It's a touring style rebuild with inserts, larger intakes and a police head.

To each his own when it comes to oil but in over 50 years and untold numbers of vehicles owned, I have only used dino oil in my vehicles and I have never had an engine failure or oil related problem. I change my oil as per the owners manual and my operating conditions. I would think the Model A engine would be just fine on any good quality dino oil. I would still ask the engine rebuilder for his advise.

I run Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles. I buy it in 5 quart jugs at walmart for around $25-28. I also run Mobil 1 or K&N oil filters (same filter) and do 8-9K mile changes on my modern vehicles. My main excuse for running synthetic is to get 0W20 and 0w30. I also feel 0w40 is best for the "A" engine but my opinion isn't worth much in most places :). I prefer my oil to stay as close to one thickness as possible and HATE starting engines with cold thick oil. 10W30 and 10W40 get scary thick around 0F.

To answer your actual question I think using conventional oil for breakin is a myth. If you want to be careful good 20 hours or so on the engine with conventional oil should be long enough for a decent break-in. As others have said follow the advise of the builder.

Years ago '76 I think ,I was leading a tour to the Nashville MAFCA Meet from the SF Bay area.I had a new engine with about 75 miles on it. The first leg was about 400 miles to San Bernardino CA.I used NON-Detergent 30wt oil. I statred out at about 35mph and went up to 45 and back down after a few minutes, then up to50-55- and back down after a few minutes later up to 60-65 and back down. I varied the speed all the way to San Bernardino. ALWAY S WATCHING THE TEMP. I then changed the oil and used fresh non-detergent all the way to Nashville and driving at normal speeds. At Nashville I changed oil again now using DETERGENT oil. The engine gave great service there after.
