  • World War II veteran Red Byron won the first NASCAR race in a 1939 Modified Ford. Byron won 10 more races that year to claim the inaugural NASCAR championship.

How cool is that?

adileo, if you want to see some cool '39 Fords, you need to join the Cigar City Flatheads in Dawsonville, Georgia for the Moonshine Festival and White Knuckle Tour from October 24th to the 26th. Dawsonville is the home of 'Battling Bill Elliott' and Thunder Road, a NASCAR Museum. North Georgia is Flathead Ford Country, there will most likely be several hundred Flathead powered cars on display, and we drive our Flatheads on the Tour on Friday. Here are two photos from last years event. First one is from the Friday Tour and the second is me, on the right, sitting with Kiwi Tony on the running board of his RHD '36, and standing to the left, is David Pearson, a NASCAR driver of note! You really should try to make it to the event, I know you'll enjoy it, :) Vic

Vic - that's sounds like a blast and I would take you up on it - except I live in New Jersey. (Frown)

C'mon... Jersey is not that far away... 22 years ago I drove my '39 Convertible Sedan from Long Island to Tampa, and I've driven the '39 to the Moonshine Festival at least six times... (1,200 miles round trip, not counting the miles put on doing the Friday Tours) Besides, there's no better way to get the cobwebs out of a Flathead... Open it up on the highway for a few hundred miles at say, 65 mph...

I'll quote you - Imagination is more important -

but I guess not with cars you gotta drive them don't you.....

If you want to read more about Red buy a book called DRIVING WITH THE DEVIL . Excellent reading about Red and the early days of Stock Car Racing . He had a bad leg as a result of the war and they more or less strapped his foot to the clutch pedal and he would twist his body to push the clutch ,and he still won races.

The 36 in 4 door is a nice looking car. When I was young a bloke next door to me had a dove grey 36 4dr (in RHD too of course). Dave Pearson was one of my favourite NASCAR racers when I used to watch it on the TV Sunday sports show in black and white in the early seventies ( only got one channel then). I was only a youngster at High school but Dave Pearsonwas one of my idols because he was driving a Ford and not a "bowtie" or a "pentastar".

The area around Dawsonville is beautiful too. Coming down from the north-east you would drive through the Great Smokey Mountains and some of the best driving roads in the country. Gorgeous in late October too.

& I don't need to worry about a place to stay - my 39 coupe trunk is big enough for 2...I'm almost there
