How hard is it to pull the motor? I think i might need to becouse i think my rear main is gone what will driveing it with a bad rear main do to the motor?

well, quite easy. I pulled my engine and transmission as one unit. I have a real small garage so I put a chain hoist in the rafters, hoisted the engine and pushed the car backwards. The engine mounts will hold the engine pinched so you need to help them let go :) Now, putting mine back in.....aligning the ujoint spline while rolling the car forward might be a challenge.

1928Pickuppain - I recently helped a friend remove and re-install his motor, and I can tell you it goes much better with two-pair or more hands.

Les Andrews Vol. I manual gives you a "order of things to do" of which you can follow for the job. It is a step-by-step instruction if you will.

If you follow a logical sequence of removal and install, all will work out ok. Sometimes it is handy to have a digital camera for "before" pictures to jog your memory for the "after."

Step #1 - unhook and remove battery. Not performing this step can cause a lot of problems.
Step #2 - Follow instructions: written, verbal (from a friend or club member who has experience), logical sequence, etc.

Good luck,

PLEASE check the capacity of your rafters before you try this at home! Most wood framed, residential garages are not built for this kind of loading.

Certainly be safe. I put a 4X6 spread across 4 rafters with the hoist attached to the middle of mentioned 4X6. Just saying what worked for me with my limited space and tool collection. :)

If I just had some rafters! I am getting to pull my motor and a cherry picker will have to do for me.

Don't run it with a bad bearing it will cost more to fix later. drop the pan and have a peek maybe you just need to remove some shims. A friend and myself pulled his engine with a plank, chain, and us on each side of the car using our legs and backs only.

Years ago i used a friend's tubular swing set (2 swings, so about 8ft) to pull model A engines and to install 55 olds in a 32, hung a 1/2 ton chain hoist from it. This swing set got transported all over town for this purpose. Those were the days!

installing the engine back in the frame was the hardest part for us. borrow or buy a frame spreader to help wide'n the gap between the motor mounts.

Where do you position the bottle jack? I borrowed the local club spreader and its offset design seemed necessary to straddle the trans.

Pulled and installed just this past Sunday.

i take mine in & out by myself . not a hard thing to do . normally i can get the motor in the mounts by starting 1 side & then jiggeling untill the other side goes in . i made a frame spreader from a good sisor jack & a piece of aluminum channel i had laying around . i put it about where the batt is . it only took a little help for it to go in . steve

Take a look at Craigslist in your area. You can get motor lifts for about half price, use it and then put it back on Craigslist .

If you use a frame spreader make sure you loosen the front body bolts. Put a floor jack under the bell housing where the front wishbone attaches to elevate the housing to align the transmission input shaft to the clutch plate. Also elevate one rear wheel to rotate the input shaft to help align the spline. Ask someone to help you. Bob
