How far can you turn brake drums

Getting things ready to put juice brakes on dad's A coupe(something I am against doing, but since it is his I dollar will). How far can you turn the 40-41 brake drums safely? They don't look real bad, but look like they have been turned atleast once in the past. I have not measured them yet, but will tommorrow. Thanks Rod

Based on previous posts, the legal limit that brake repair businesses should follow is 12.062" across the diameter where the brake shoe linings contact the inner surface of the drums.

The legal limit may vary by state. In NH the max limit is .090 over or 12.090" diam for a drum that started life at 12.000" diam if the max limit is not stated on the drum. Depending if there is an inspection requirement in your state, you should be able to view the inspection regs the state DMV web site.

i turned mine past the "legal limit" and shimmed the linnings up to make the difference.they work fine 1935 ford pickup

If drums are "not too bad" why skim at all?
The new shoes will "bed" to the drum surface after a bedding in period.

Mart.

If they look ok go for it.Its a good way to make money selling new ones, but think before self adjusting brake they would go till the brakes were steel on steel. If they were turned to far, you would risk popping the wheel cylinder out to far.You could get years out of yours.

This doesn't apply, but in the Model A world there is a view that Henry did not want rims turned. Just buy new ones.
