How do you store all your parts?

My garage is getting filled up. Piles are everywhere. I'm in trouble and losing control. I need help, possibly intervention. I know I'm not alone. What does one do?

Well my son started working of my shop and started cleaning and
organizing and it looks great!! Now I can't find anything.....

Check out carpentry plans for simple shelves. Also look into a shed - wooden or even a little tin one. My wife made me quit "saving" old vans for storage.

Cheap or free file cabinets off Craigslist.
I have 1 tall four drawer traditional file and I have 3 four drawer lateral files.
Nice and tidy with the drawers closed, and you can still stack stuff on top.
The stuff inside stays a bit cleaner and its less likely to get damaged while its waiting to get installed.
I have movers dollies under all of them. I can empty out one side of my garage down to the bare floor and drywall in about 10 minutes.
I got 3 of them free and I paid like $20 for the fourth one.

Lol...you have a looooooong way to go to worry about things!

Heck, I can see concrete!

Shelves, cabinets, bins, trays, ceiling and wall hooks. Once all of that becomes full I start looking for more space. I have diagnosed myself as an incurable class 5 hoarder :D.

You're funny! You're just a "beginner". You ain't even got started good yet. If I could see that much concrete and work space I'd be buyin' more stuff! DD

My kids have moved out long ago, so I use my son's bedroom for storing some stuff. My bride is very understanding. Only problem is where to put the stuff when he comes to visit.

It never ends. While we enjoy our hobby, including parts and tool hoarding, I can't help thinking that as I pick up more $5 and $10 items (sometimes more), it costs 20-30K to put up a building and storage areas to keep my treasures clean and dry.
Just an example; I had been storing the parts for two cars on my flat bed car trailer, stored in the back on my shop, and an unplanned use for the trailer came up. What to do with the parts? I have 90 shelves on the floor above with none empty. I went to Lowes and purchased a 2'x4', five shelf unit. I got done with trailer and guess what, there's a few things already collecting on this convenient flat surface. I hope Lowes has sufficient inventory!! Hint: Stack, don't spread.
P.S. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Howard

My boneyard behind my garage was originally intended for storage of rusty gold.
When my garage and loft overflowed out to the boneyard, I discovered how easy it is to change iron into gold!

Here are various pic's from the old parts barn (now torn down) and pic's from the shop storage over the last few years. Getting ready to move a building from the farn to my back yard so I can finish moving parts from the farm. Farm is going to be sold in the next few years, so am selling alot of the bigger parts stored outside soon. Rod

I saw two real nice shelf units that looked like they might be on their way to the scrap compound at work today. Problem is, there is no legitimate way to buy scrap from work, so I can't get my hands on 'em.

I bought some shelves a while ago but the chipboard shelves sag after a while with any sort of weight on them. Older pre loved industrial stuff is by far the best.

Part number/group order - the only way to do it. One of these days I'm going to do that. . . New pole barn is going up within a month. By month #2, it will likely be full.

I've been stacking up Ford parts for at least 60 years...my life looks like an earthquake that happened in about 1950 that dumped a junkyard and a Ford dealer into the same hole and stirred. But as a theoretical thing, the only approach that has helped at all has been to line my garage with simple shelves of 2X4 and plywood. Make the lowest shelf fairly high so that space can take a vertical engine block or anything big, heavy, and/or filthy.
Then just try to put related parts in the same neighborhood.
My disorder has its advantages...when I look for something, I always find things I lost and forgot about 20 years ago, and it's almost as much fun as Hershey!
