how do you bypas the V/regulator to test generator?

I'm working on a friends 63 Galaxie, I need to know the procedure for bypassing the voltage regulator to see if the generator is putting out so I can tell if it has a bad gen. or regulator.

I know on GMs you can ground the field terminal to bypass the regulator but I'm certaain Fords are wired different so I'm sure the procedure is different.

Thanks. Billy

if its not showing charge start engine and let it idle at about 600 rpm, pull the ground cable off the battery, if the engine keeps running the generator is putting out voltage and the regulator is bad, if engine dies then gen is bad and regulator is ok, reinstall the batt cable as soon as you find out which is bad.

Pulling the cable while the engine is running will tell you it's not charging, not tell what component is at fault. The engine will still stall if the regulator is bad. Thats why i need to know how to bypass the regulator to rule it out.

Thank-you for your response.

pulling the batt cable wil tell you what componet is or not working, if the gen is not working no juice is being put into the electrical system from the generator and the engine will die, if the gen is good engine will keep running because the gen is putting out juice to supply the coil and engine wont die, if the regulator is bad engine will still run but wont let gen charge batt, its that simple bad gen engine dies, bad regulator no charge to batt or no charge shown on gauge, believe me or not your choice
