How do I test a voltage regulator

I have a 1950 8BA F3 with a generator converted to 12v and a brand new regulator from a 56 that should be 12v. I have polarized the generator and I can get the generator to produce voltage if I bypass the regulator. The generator produces about 16v but the regulator seems to do nothing and yes I was left stranded and had to get a jump from a chevy guy who was laughing at me.

Is there a fool proof way to test if the regulator is acually bad?

Thanks for the help

with everything hooked up,just put a jumper wire from the field at the gen to a ground ,if it charges you have a bad regulator...

Find the oldest gen. shop in your area and let the oldest mech. there set it up for you. Not much the average person can do with these at home. ken ct.
