How Do I Fit '36 Door Handles!!

This may be a silly question but I'm having real differculty getting the square bar on the back of the outside door handle to fully engage through the lock mechanism.

The lock works and the latches work fine with the interior handles.

Is there a trick to getting the square bar trough? It seems like there are two squares and are off rotation to each other?

Thanks.

Is the handle fitting up to the body ok? You can't get the rod into the latch? I'm having a hard time picturing what the trouble is.

If the square shaft doesn't fit , you might have to run a metal file on the shaft. Sometimes the chrome plating is too thick for the shaft to pass through the latches. This is especially true with the junk that we are getting from China. You might have to do this seveal times a wee bit at a time to get a proper fit.
Hopes this helps

What you have to do is operate the inside handle back and forth gently while pushing in on the outside handle. When the two holes in the latch mechanism get aligned properly, the shaft of the handle will slip on in. It will take a little trial and error, but that's the only way you are goin' to git 'er done.

The repo handles I've gotten do not have the end of the shaft finished to resemble an original handle. I cut them off by using an orig handle to get length and then carefully grind the 4 corners off a short distance back from the end of the shaft for a distance that approximates an original handle. Nearly any old Ford handle will show you what it should look like but it would be best to use an original 36 handle to get the initial length. I've done many and sometimes they DO get tricky. Hope this helps. Al
