How Clean Was My Valley

Was there another way to liquefy the sludge? could he have used a detergent oil and frequent oil changes to remove that sludge?

One turn of your crankshaft will score your bearings, if there is crap in it.
Clean her out the very best you can. clean all the sediment from every hollow around the lifters etc, and when you have it perfect, liberally oil every valve stem, lifter etc. The guys who tell you the "I got away with it" stories will not be picking up the bill when it goes wrong.
If it hasn't run for a long time, when you have the pan off again, do your best to get some oil up around the gudgeon pins, and up the bores. Also prime the engine galleries from the oil pressure sender hole before you start her.
All the best.
