Hello all.. I have a friend that just got to Reno, Nv for Hot August Nights with his 1937 Ford.. All original 85hp V8 6Volt. He went to get it off the trailer and the starter failed. Does anyone know where he can find one ASAP and also someone that can install it? I wont be up there until Thursday to help.

We got it fixed.. Thanks for the help!!

If he's a V-8 club member have him use his roster and he will find several members in the Reno area who can help.

What do you mean by failure?? Could just be stuck. G.M.

G.M. above may very-well be right. Starters don't necessarily just FAIL on these flatheads, but the drive CAN become jammed at the flywheel, which results in a starter that won't do squat until it becomes un-jammed.

To un-jam: Have your friend un-strap the car on the trailer. Since it IS on a trailer, have your friend inside the car to BE READY to apply brakes...ONLY IF NECESSARY! Put the transmission in 3rd gear, with clutch pedal out (engaged). Have someone(s) rock the car back and forth JUST enough to barely make the engine turn (watch the belt/fan) in BOTH directions. After it is evident that the engine DID turn in both directions (which should release the starter drive IF it was jammed), have your friend try the starter. Good luck! DD

The starter bendix drive sticks on my '35 fordor sedan every once in a while. Last year it stuck when the car was in a position where it could not go forward. So I thought I could drift it backwards and jump start the engine with transmission in reverse. WRONG! The starter became so jammed againt the flywheel that it totally locked up the engine. I had to completely remove the starter to get it freed up.

If he really needs a new/good used starter, one place to check would be Louis Cote's Shop in Fallon, Nevada. I don't have his phone number handy but he should be in the EFV-8 Club Roster or you could probably use Google to find him.
