There are several definitions for horse power. One is calculated using the bore, stroke, mean effective pressure, and clearance volume then multiply by the number of cylinders using the PLANK formula for indicated horsepower. Dynamometer tests take all the other not so calculable factors such as camshaft lift/duration, type of fuel system, and turbo/supercharging effects. Brake horse power is about drive train loss so there are more than a few ways to come up with the ratings. The British had the most interesting way to rate horsepower for taxing purposes.
Manufacturers had horsepower ratings for the products they produced but it largely depends on the make, model, and year of manufacture with the type of engine used. Is this for a Y-block Ford engine?
