horn rod ID

Hello... This is my first post but I've been lurking for a while.

A few months ago I bought a Model A. I'll be honest and admit I was all fired up to hot rod it... but I'm having a pretty good time just getting the car to the point where I can get it to start. I rebuilt the Tilly carb with much help from the Ford Barn search engine. I've moved on to the wiring - the wiring was not in good shape with a switch added, generic horn button added to the side of steering column, terrible splices under the hood, etc.

So, I'm re-wiring the car. My question is about the horn rod. I've made the tentative decision to replace it. Measuring it the way the Model A Mechanics Handbook specifies, my rod is > 46 inches long. There are no replacements for this length... am I missing something? Am I supposed to measure to the depressed area at the end of the rod? The picture in the book makes it look like I measure to the plastic insulator.

(And just because someone is going to ask, the second picture shows what I think is the problem. The plastic insulator is broken/missing at the end of the rod. I could try to fab one or buy the repair kit but the light switch might not polish out and the horn button is cracked. If I "rebuild" the rod I have I might get it right for 3/4 the cost of a new one. I'd rather just get a new one and move on. I will put a polishing wheel to the original one tonight though, just to give it a try.)
