Horn Rod Gremlins

I just adjusted my 2-tooth steering box and replaced the wire in the horn rod. The rod w/ button was tested for proper function both on the bench and in the column (before the spring and spider were installed). There was continuity, i.e., grounding only when the button is pushed. The problem is that now, after installing the spring and spider, the continuity is continuous, such that the horn would always be sounding.

I pulled the horn rod and repeated the initial testing, which was OK, but once the spring and spider are back in, the same problem occurs! What should I be looking for? Thanks much!

It could be that the center spring contact on the wiring harness contact plate is off center and rubbing on the rotating contact plate inside the headlight switch housing where it meets the end of the horn rod, completing the circuit. Remedy is to slide a piece of shrink tubing over the spring , leaving the face open to contact the end of the horn rod.

I actually haven't even gotten to installing the wire harness as yet. I need to resolve the problem of the short in the horn rod steering column assembly.

Well, the subject line was not misplaced. After checking and testing things a third time my frustration led to a slamming hand on the steering wheel. All of a sudden, the stars came into alignment and the horn rod began to assume its proper role in the Model A electrical universe. I suspect the gremlins may again arise but I am confident of a fix.
