Horn problem

I'm still struggling with the horn on the 1954 Ranch Wagon.

The wire that comes up through the steering column seems to be missing something, maybe a spring or some sort of clip to hold the brass tip up high enough to come in contact with the cone on the back side of the horn ring.

I pull the wire up,,install the horn ring and it might blow a couple of times,I remove the horn ring and the brass tip has pushed back down in the shaft.

Anyone ever have this problem or better yet have a cure? HRP

The horn contact normally sits inside a little metal ferrule with a spring behind it to push it against the horn plate. Sometimes the lip around the ferrule breaks off which doesn't allow the spring to push the wire., or the spring corrodes. You may be able to bend a lip on the ferrule if the lip is broken off. Either way you probably need to replace the wire.

Sounds like your asking if a spring should be in there? Yes there should be a small spring, about the size of a ball point pen spring cut in half.

as stated in the prior post a ballpoint pen spring works great i did that to my 64 ranchero contact as the contact was connected to the spring by a wire

It sounds like you are missing the metal ferrule and spring at the top of the wire. If that is true, the wire must have been spliced at some point, because the ferrule and spring do not come off the wire assembly after the end terminals have been crimped on at the factory.
If so, you can buy the horn wire assembly new from Concours Parts
