Hoods

I have some hood sides in my electrolysis tank. I spent the day with paint remover And the wire brush and now Im letting the tank do its job. These panels are so nice how do you tell if there reproduction or not? And my next question is. How about the early hoods. How are the louvers tapered? Is it front to rear? Or is the louver it self tapered. I hope what I have is for my 1929 coupe. Ill take a photo later.

Looking at mine--- Opening faces to the rear (Would get more air if other way). As for which one you have... I would recommend that take some pictures, look at www.MACSautoparts.com (Page 4 has all models) and then assume. It took me several months to come up with body type (50A), but knew within a few minutes of reading it was either a Sport Coupe, Cabriolet or special Coupe...
Yours will most likely be a Coupe, Business Coupe or Special Coupe as these are very near (expect the top is different).

Enjoy whatever it is.

I can not tell you about the 28-29 hoods, but here is what I know about the later ones.

The repro 30-31 sides are flat so the front and rear edges are a straight line and the louvers are flat.

The originals for 30-31 were curved to match the radiator shell and cowl. The louvers also had a curve to them.

That is the dead giveaway for the 30-31 hoods.

The repro rivets being sold to hold the hold downs and the handle to the sides are different. They are wider and have a much flatter feathering. I made them look original by chucking them in a drill and running a file to get the same profile as an original. So that might also be a clue.

Thanks But I know what model I have. But just wondering about hoods 28-29 I took the j&s out to the barn I think I have both early and late hoods sides which is good I need Both. But what about the hood tops are they the same.

Dennis,
I have a friend that had good tops on his hood, but bad louver panels. He bought the louver panels, from Rootlieb I believe, and the original and new sections fit together fine. They didn't want to sell individual sections, but they did in his case. This means the panels are interchangeable. I have a repro hood I have been wondering about the manufacture of it. I think the repro hoods are made of 20 ga sheetmetal instead of 19 ga. I don't know if anyone but Rootlieb makes model A hoods. Like was mentioned earlier, I noticed the rivets are little different from original hoods -flatter and the heads are larger.

the early hoods in 28 the louvers were strait and if you looked at the top of the louvers they lined up strait so from looking at the front to the back the gap inbetween the louvers to top part of the hood were closer and and towards the gas tank were farther apart so intern the hood would be pitching up and the louvers were strait across

On 28-29 Hoods the side panels are longer to the back end than the front.

On the 28 Hood the louvers are all the same length and in a level line at the bottom; this makes the upper end of the louvers appear to taper from front to back; being narrow at the front and wider at the back.

On 29 Hoods the louvers graduate in length so the louvers maintain a straight line in relation to the upper hood panel; the bottom of the louvers maintain a straight line to the bottom of the side panel.

Heres some photos I'm not sure what order they will appear Mounted hood is the early 28 type - Gray panel has early style hood latch clips but latter handles- Rust colored is a 29 style.

Dudley and Dennis,
I believe the second one is a 28 as it has the rounded hood latch clips like Dennis pointed out. The last one is a 29.

Rusty,

Look at the louvers on #2, they run even with the hinge, like #3, #1 has the distinct
taper(just looks that way), louver to hinge line. That's what I've look for for 40 yrs.,
wrong?

The first photo is a very early 28; see the open rivit used to secure the handle, its just like the Model T hood. This is Style 1.

Style 2 - no photo

Style 3 - Photo 2 and 3 are both 29 style hoods; the louvers are parallel both top and bottom.

The reason #2 is not a 29 or at least a lmid to late 29 is the hood clips are rounded in both ends. Check your judging guidelines section 13-1. It could be an early 29, but it probably is a 1928 hood.

I'm not seeing the rounded hood clips. It looks to me like they are as Ron called them.
