Hood springs Super Deluxe

Good morning,

Is there anyone producing decent hood springs? My '46 has severe hood droop when opened. THe springs and assembly look new. I saw springs on eBay and I ordered one to get an idea of the quality, but I don't think it will be high.

I tried all the usual suspects, Moss, Drake, CArpenter, etc. with no luck.

Has anyone here bought good quality springs by dimension, installed them and had success.

Thanks Darrell. Got it. I just ordered a pair. I don't know how I missed for them when I searched last week.

This is the part that you are looking for.
This pair is NOS, but have been sold.
Hood Spring for 1942-1948 Fords and Mercurys

Thanks for the photo. I'll post before and after pictures as soon I get the new springs installed.

It may take a week or so.

Tony, A friend with a 48 Mercury installed some Reproduction Springs, but they didn't have the same tensions that the originals have, and still needed a prop to hold the Hood open.

Look at the hinges carefully and make sure none of the holes are not elongated. The pins in the hinges can get worn and cause some droop.

After Market Accessory[/QUOTE]

Doesn't appear color matched to the car. Do they come in the '46 colors?

Mine appear brand new along with the arms and linkage. From memory the number of coils and the diameter of the wire don't look close to the originals in the picture on this thread.

The wire on mine is .076". THere are twenty four coils. Overall length is 6.00." THere is an inner spring with about .035" wire, no idea of the number of coils. Kinda like a throttle return spring on steroids.

I'll wait wait on the repros and see how they work and if there is any improvement. If not I'm going to try to find some online or our local Fastenal that will work.

Need to ensure you have proper bolts/nuts/washers and u-clip at the hinges (at bottom of arm with spring attached), and then tighten the bolts quite a bit. Found on my Mercury, with a longer and heavier hood, that new springs alone won’t hold the hood up. It requires some friction at the bolts that are furthest toward the front of the car. And after a number of hood open/close cycles, they may need to be snugged up again.

When I replaced the hinges and springs on my 48 from Drake, they came as a unit. I don't know if the spring Drake sells separately is the same. Anyway, the replacement was a success as the hood lined up very well and no longer needed a prop.
