No offense taken and sure, I had my glasses on -- I try not to tempt fate too much. But, I've found this method to be very controlled and stable and a heck of a lot better than trying to expand the spring with ropes or other methods. I recommend it.

That trick with the washers works well to safely remove the springs also. In stall the washers with the hood up and then lower the hood and reach over and remove spring or have an assistant do it.

got those springs on today
streched them with a rachet strap and filled the gaps with washers and quarters:)
worked great
thanks for the idea

Forgive me. I feel really dumb! I have had my springs for about 2 years trying to work up enough courage to tackle the installation. I have ratchet straps, chain binders, a floor jack and a small chain hoist. I can't seem to visualize how any of these will work. How do you attach any of these items to the spring to expand it. I also have brake spring tools but picture the spring flying off and hurting something. Mainly Me! can any of you explain how to utilize any of the above. ie; hood spring installation 101 for dummys. Thanks guys. I am just hoping that they are not imported junk and that they will, in fact, hold the hood up. Those that are on the car now do not.

This looks like a good idea since I am planing on working on my hood springs prettys, however, my floor jack has a removeable cup on the top which could be a bit of a problem. I wouldn't want it to come out and take my head off. Any suggestions???

hook one end of spring in hole in frame ( or anything else that is stationary, rugged and has a hole in it)
hook the rachet end of rachet stap to something else that is stationary and in line with the spring
hook the strap end hook to the other end of spring
strech spring to about 8 inch , put 2 washers in each gap to "save" the length, back off rachet strap,, install spring , pull out washers with pliers

you could probably rig it up between two trees also using 2 sections of chain

SAFETY GLASSES!
