Hood Hinge Tearing

I have 3 complete ‘29 hoods that I am cherry picking panels for my restoration.
This top hood section is one of the best has tearing by the hinge area. Probably stressed by vibration or being pulled too tight. I am inclined to drill small hole at end of crack and MiG weld. Has anyone done this repair?

normally that caused by folding the hood over. or the hinge gets tight. I do not drill a hole. just weld them up.

Repair as you indicated. If you’re restoring, file the edges of the holes on each side and panel to open up the clearance a bit more and provide room for paint material buildup.

This is good example of stress cracking. The combination of the sharp corner where the hinge meets the hood and the absense of lubrication on the hinge pin caused a crack to develop at the sharp corner. Over time rusting between the pin and hinge developes. When opening the hood the resistance between the pin and hinge causes the hinge to flex. After many hood openings a crack begins to develop at the sharp corner and continues to grow over continued cycling of the hood.
The fix is to remove all rust from the hinge holes and weld the cracks. After leveling the welds install a small radius at each sharp corner. Assemble hood with a stainless steel hinge pin along with a thin lubricant.
