holley 885 problems

I have a stock 50 merc and am looking for a different carb that will work with the Loadamatic distributor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As far as i know being a distributor rebuilder , there is NO carb that will work with the loadamatic other than the orginal.
The orginal carb used calibrated "venturi" vacuum to advance the spark, NOT manifold vacuum and no other carb would have this venturi calibration from 0 to 4" of vac based on throttle and load.

I would use Charlie on this forum for a carb rebuild as he tests each on a live engine stand.

Using the Ford 3-bolt type carb would be the only other type to work with the Load-O-Matic. The Holley 885 us susceptible to damage from shade tree mechanics that tighten things too tight or drop stuff on the floor. The float bowl to base fit is critical and I've found a lot of them that are warped. The shroud has a vacuum passage that makes the power valve function and it has to hold vacuum to work. I have used as many as three different carbs to put together one good one before.

When everything works, its the best one going that works with the Load-O-Matic system. Alternatives are the Rochester 2GC carb and a modified Chevy or Chrysler distributor that can still use the vacuum advance.

I agree with Bubba. It would be the easiest, and best end results to rebuild your original Holley 885. Charlie NY is an excellent choice. I also have done quite a few 885's, and all domestic carbs for a long time.
