Hogs Head Help

I want to mount a T5 on the back of my 8BA truck motor. I have the short bell housing. I think what I need is a hogs head. What years and types of transmission would appropriate ones come from. I see complete 3 speed transmissions around. Can one of these bells be used for this?

Thanks!

Contact Gary at Cornhuskers in Kansas. I am not a fan of the "hogs head" off a truck. You still need an adapter for it to mount the T-5. You can also get the Flathead to Chevy adapter from various sources. Wilcap,Speedway. etc

Not a rel big concern for me. I can easily machine an adapter for hogs head to T5. However going from bell housing to T5 is much tougher. Thanks for the tip!

Mike, the hoghead come from a big truck with the 4 speed with the granny low. It unbolts from the front of the big trans and will bolt to your 3in. adapter. It has the throw out fork and shaft in it, 6 bolts hold it onto the big trans. THEN call Dwight Bond, 303-468-5885 he makes an adapter that bolts right to the back of the hogshead. Less than $200.00. I've used 2-3 of them, great rig and cheap. Walt

57 Chevy,
Try this website. I think you are looking for a stamped bellhousing (Hogshead). Ford made a lot of different units between 1948-1953. It really helped me find what I was looking for. http://www.flatheadv8.org/bellhousing.pdf

Look at #14. It may be what you need. I saw a complete unit on eBay just a week or so ago.

That's the first I've seen of that bellhousing. I wonder if the starter drive is open to the elements of if there is a cover that goes on there. I think I like the old cast iron truck 4-speed half bell better. Another good one is the late 51 Merc bellhousing. They have the old Borg Warner trans pattern that can be adapted and it has the rotating equalizer/fork set up plus a removable dust cover on the bottom so you can look up in there.

Kerby:

The hogs head bolts up to the "traditional" flathead bellhousing.

Try Mac's speed shop or mac's speed equipment, I have one of their adapters and it looks like it's going to be a neat set up and for the price I don't think I can do ay better.
I got my adapter off E-bAY,their prices are around 289.00.
good luck,

Hard to believe there wasn't a picture of the Hogs head in that web site. What I don't understand is why there isn't an adapter for the Ford T-5. Since the late 90's Chevy is using the Ford case. It's a very simole adapter, bolts to the 49-56 Ford standard shift bell housing. Vern Tardel used to make them. I made one for Richard and If I could see better I'd make them by the dozens so everybody could have one. The Ford box has better ratios.

I was wondering about the one 1 post before my last one (#6) with the link to E-Pay/Speedway Motors bellhousing set up. That is a funny looking thing. It looks like there is no starter drive cover on it. Kind of pricy too! I can't tell what sort of clutch arm it has either.

Thanks. I was going to go out and snap a pict. of this very set-up. Appreciate it.

From the Dick's picture you can see how the hogs head bolts up to a "normal" flathead bellhousing.

Here is the bellhousing that I have for my `51 F-1 Pickup. It has the original 6 banger in it and I want to replace it with an 8RT. The bellhousing I took off the 8RT was shallow and a big bolt pattern for the older transmissions.
Bellhousing2.jpg

As you can see it is over 6” deep.

Surely this bolt pattern matches my truck transmission.

Another view.
Bellhousing4.jpg

This is with the starter plate. Note the large center hole. This is for the trucks. The bellhousing bolt pattern matches my engine.

I sure hope I am on the right track!

Can I use one of these hogs heads from any truck 4 speed or is there a certain year range? What do they typically sell for? The adaptor looks real nice, however it is certainly a part I can make myself in the machine shop.

Thanks

It is from late '30's to pre-'48 I think. Dick or Bruce would be the experts to confirm this.

OL'-Ron, Dwight Bond makes that adapter for the hogshead with the S-10 trans and also the Ford bolt patten. Walt

The "same" hogshead also was used on the late 40s and early 50s Ford pickups and big trucks with the heavy duty 3-speed. The HD 3-speed looks similar to a 4-speed but has only two shifter rails, not three, in the shifter top.

37 Fatfender , all parts in stock, adapter with bushing, hogs head , correct clutch disc 9 or 10" with choice of spline count. available individually or as a kit.
