What would be a good place to start trouble shooting high voltage at the bat at idle. 12 to 13 volts on a 6v system

If it allows 12 volts, it can't be adjusted. I would guess the voltage coil is bad. Get a 6 volt for a Ford, as a 6 volt regulator for a GM product is different.

I wonder if this car has been changed to 12 volts already.
This may not tell but is the big terminal hole on cable pos or neg.
Pos big is neg ground. big neg pos ground.

If you are checking at battery with a digital meter could be your volt meter.
I would check again with old fashion anolog meter.
I have a 12 volt battery check with digital and got 14.79, running went to 18 volts.
Anolog meter right on 12 volts not running.
The battery in meter could be low, reads better with new battery.
That my guess.

Do note the tip on analog meter...old VR's work with vibrating points, and a digital meter trying to follow the spikes can go stark mad. An analog gauge is sluggish enough to read the average...

Thanks for the help it was just the volt meter that I was using the analog meter is reading 7 volts. Glad I didn't order a 70 $ reg.
