high gear

My 1931 sedan pops out of third gear when decelerating on compression. It was just fine before replacing the engine. Have tried another tower, no change. Any ideas what we did to cause this problem when changing the engine? The car has around 70,000 miles

This is a step that is often overlooked. A flywheel housing that is not on the same center line as the crankshaft can cause exactly the problem you are describing.
