Hidem Welt- Installation

Any guidelines on keeping the beads separated on ‘hidem welt’ while hammering the tacks to the top bows?

I used one of those paint can openers that the hardware store gives you with a bottle opener on one end a lid pry on the other. I cut off the bottle opener end and ground it smooth. so I used the pry end to spread the welt open with my new handle wedged in the closed seem of the previously nailed section.
