Help with Kiwi Quick Change

I am assembling one of Derek's Model A quick change units and see an upcoming challenge.

The 2-1/8" pinion adjusting and lock nuts are recessed into the quick change housing and are not accessible with the normal spanner or pipe wrench.

If any one has assembled one of these units, I would appreciate any tips or tricks on how this was handled.

If you made some special tooling for this, might it be available for loan or rent?

-Thanks in advance

My V/8 and Championship Q/C's all drop in as a unit. Just heat the housing and in it go's.
Do you have photos of the parts,...bearings and housing?

The way your describing it sure sounds difficult too set the pre-load..

I made a socket by forming a piece of 1/8" by 2" strap iron around a nut (on the bench) and welding another piece of iron across the top of that and welding a 3/4" nut to that (to put a wrench on). A little crude but it worked.

Hey Phred,
The kiwi is made for the model A rear end and Derick sells an early V8 version also. Which are you working ? Derrick sends along a message that he is available for 'advice' when you are doing an installation. Contact him with questions for direct help.
I had a 4e4 friend install mine. He did a wonderful job. You might find that you have to mod a couple things. On mine , it was the radius rods.

Phred did mail me & I suggested same as Jim , that's what I did & it worked , Not sure how all the others got on but this was the 1st inquiry on nut tightening. Let us know how you make out, Pate swap coming up plus Antique nats, Holiday time.

Thanks to all.

HardTimes: Mine is a Model A Kiwi QC.

A friend has a 2- 1/8" socket that will fit into the recess nicely, should be able to get along fine.

Peace, Phred

If your putting that rear in a model a, the spring is at a sharp angle to original crossmember. because the driveshaft is lower than stock. I had to pie cut frame to fit angle of spring. The rear works great. Joe

I made this for Jag transmissions,...cheap and quick..

The rear radius rods won't line up properly. I've been told that if you reverse them, side to side, they will line up as they should. I found this out after I cut and welded mine!

Jim correct , as in our instructions on the A model you swap them side to side & turn them upside down , Just like stock down under ?? Winter is coming.

Yep no Chinese either , The Queens English , However you do need to reverse the sheet & turn it upside down , & switch right to left , simple,
