Help with a rewire!

I'm in the middle of a total rewire of my 53 Customline using a 12 circuit harness from EZ Wiring and I have a question, possibly a dumb one, but help is needed nonetheless...

I've got the stock 12 Volt generator, and the harness includes a wire labeled "Alternator Exciter" and another wire labeled "Alternator Power". Are these both unnecessary because I have a generator? Or do they need to be connected to something?

Thanks in advance for any help that you guys can give me!

The alternator exciter wire is used if you are using a three wire alternator. It goes from the dash light to the alternator. The other wire is the power lead for the alternator. If you are using a gen. and a voltage regulator the wires would not be used. You need to wire the car for a regulator to gen. The wiring is different.

I believe the power wire would go to the bat terminal and the exciter to the field terminal, plus you will need a grd.

I should have added, those wires would go to the reg. you will still need the pigtail wires from the gen. to the reg.

There are three wires that lead from the gen to the reg, field from gen, on the side goes to the field on the reg... Ground, on the side goes to ground on the reg... (Probably on the base of the reg). Armature, on the back of the gen, goes to armature, or arm on the reg... Bat on the reg goes to the batttery...

My opinion, the alt wires on your harness are going to be in an inconvenient location, but you could use the Alternator power to hook up to the bat connection on the regulator... Exciter has no use, imo...

Hope this is usefull...

Thanks guys! I already made the three connections from the generator to the regulator, it was just those two wires I wasn't 100% sure about. I appreciate your replies! This helped me out!

I have a 53 Mainline that I plan a complete rewire {Only for safety reasons }
Are you doing a complete rewire or only dash to engine?
Are you happy with 12 circuit harness from EZ wire?:D
How are the instructions to follow?

I also rewired for safety reasons. the original wiring had lots of exposed wires and shorts all over the car. I'm doing a complete rewire, pretty happy with the EZ Wiring harness. I've actually used one of theirs before on a Plymouth. The labels on the wires are clear and the instructions are good enough to figure everything out.

I rewired my 55 F-100 with an EZ wiring harness .If you have any problems ,just call the number provided with the kit and your questions will be answered .The tech support is second to none .JMO

Glad to hear someone is happy with EZ wiring. Bought a complete harness for my 41 pickup and it was a nightmare. Customer "service" was no help.I finally figured out the signal lights after I determined the sockets were wired backwards in the harness! When I emailed about mounting the fuse panel the response was "cut off the tab and drill the base. I regret buying the harness, you really get what you pay for.

The two wires you have in the wiring kit you must use. The exciter wire is needed for the generator warning light and the alternator power wire is to get power from the generator to the main harness.
Both these wires will connect to your existing regulator. Your existing generator wiring loom must be used or a new one fabricated from the left over cable.
A warning light needs to be spliced into the exciter wire to give an indication of what is going on and this connects to the field terminal of the regulator. The power wire goes to the battery terminal of the regulator. Your generator looms connects up as previous.
There is a good diagram of what you need to accomplish in the first wiring diagram on this site. It is an MG diagram but they are all the same.

Further to my last post the instruction sheet for a painless wiring kit shows how to wire a generator using their kit which is basically the same. They don't show the indicator light but this just connects to the field terminal.
Hope all this helps.
