Help to identify long tailshaft

First of all, please forgive my inexperience! Working on a '31 roadster project and while looking for a flathead powerplant, I stumbled upon a circa 1952 EAB V8. It came with a long, tapered "tailshaft" attached with the characters "AB-7651-A" cast into it's side. Tried to upload a photo but apparently too large to be accepted. Can anyone help me to know what and how it may have been used? The seller couldn't provide much info...
