Hey friends! Need a bit of advice here. In process of rebuilding my 30 Coup and need to replace the drag link. I pulled the cotter pin and tried with all my might to turn the front end plug. With 84 years of rust and whatnot she ain't at all interested in moving. Tried to heat it as well with same results. Any good ideas out there? Signed baffled in Chapel Hill!!!

I had a drag link heated to almost white hot and the plug still wouldn't come out. I just couldn't save it. I would heat it red hot then dip it in a bucket of water to see if that doesn't loosen the plug. Also be sure to use a good drag link socket as sold by most of the Model A parts houses.

i use a drag link socket with an 1/2 impact working it in and out slowly on slightly reduced power and PB

worked for the last few i did but never had a real stubborn one i had to heat yet

You may have to remove the arm from the steering spindle. This is not a task to be entered into lightly. The last one of these I did I used a two leg bearing puller and a whole bunch of foul language.

But once out on the bench, one can "beat" the exterior of the drag link with a hammer and anvil and get some relative movement between the internal threads of the drag link and the external threads of the plug.

You certainly want to use the drag link socket to turn it.

Or I suppose you could just blow off the drag link with a torch/sawsall and go buy another from the parts houses. They're not that expensive.

I hate to give up that easy though.

Some replacement male "plugs" are not the correct thread and diameter and can really jamb things up. I've run into them on two different cars.
